Sleep Medicine in New York and New Jersey
Helping You Get A Better Night’s Sleep
Getting a consistent good night’s sleep is much more important than people think. It affects your overall health and the quality of your life. We educate patients about simple oral sleep appliances and how they have become a clinically sound alternative to CPAP and are used to treat symptoms of sleep apnea, including those of loud snoring and daytime fatigue.

How Do I Know If I Have Sleep Apnea?
During sleep, the muscles in your throat naturally relax. This narrows the breathing passage and creates the perfect condition for noisy vibrations to occur during both inhaling and exhaling. The sound created can vary greatly. Many people just view it as an annoyance or don’t want to address it because it is embarrassing, but it can truly be harmful if not taken seriously.
FACT: About 70% of Loud Snorers Have Obstructive Sleep Apnea
What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?
Obstructive sleep apnea is a condition in which the upper airway collapses during sleep, causing breathing to stop. While asleep, the factors that keep your airway open do not function the same way that they do during the day.
As you fall asleep the muscles of the airway relax as your body relaxes and the brain’s control over breathing changes. When the airway collapses, the soft tissue causes an obstruction to the flow of air into your lungs and you actually stop breathing. As a reaction, your body quickly wakes you up so you can breathe again (also called a micro-arousal). In patients with sleep apnea, micro-arousal can happen 50-100 times per hour – sometimes more than once per minute!
Common Conditions of Sleep Apnea
Many of our patients are unaware that they have sleep apnea and/or the seriousness of it when left untreated. That’s why every patient that comes into the office is screened for sleep apnea or referred in-house.
If you constantly feel tired throughout the day, have trouble concentrating or staying awake, or have ever stopped breathing during sleep, it is important to get a sleep test which can be done in the comfort of your own home. Sleep Apnea is a serious condition and if untreated may lead to:
- Heart Disease
- High Blood pressure
- Weight gain
- Memory problems
Oral Sleep Solutions
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has now approved Oral Sleep Appliances or Mandibular Advancement Devices (MAD), as viable alternatives for mild to moderate sleep apnea, and severe sleep apnea that has not been successfully treated with a CPAP machine.
An Oral Sleep Appliance might be the ideal choice for you if you suffer from:
- Sleep Apnea
- Upper Airway Resistance
Our Sleep Medicine Team can provide you with information and alternatives. We invite you to schedule a consultation to find out how an Oral Sleep Appliance can change your life.
