Non-Invasive Screenings

Our Enhanced Wellness Dental Hygiene Visits

ProHEALTH Dental provides convenient, non-invasive chairside screenings for critical clinical vital sign data that may reveal an undiagnosed medical condition. While this is not a definitive diagnosis of a particular health complication - it may indicate the need for further evaluation. Patients who are identified as being potentially at risk are referred to their primary care physicians for further assessment, and we then coordinate our dental care with our patients' medical care. Dental visits are generally more frequent than medical visits. Because of this, we are taking the opportunity to provide more than just your standard dental screenings. We include non-invasive medical screenings to identify underlying health issues.

How Does This Work?

Once a year, at your annual dental hygiene visit, the hygienist will conduct simple, non-invasive health screenings. These screenings allow us to be proactive in helping you achieve the best overall health outcomes and ensure your well-being during your visits with us.

Non-Invasive Screenings Include:

  • Blood Pressure Screenings - Blood pressure monitoring may determine a patient who presents with high blood pressure (hypertension) which can lead to a heart attack or stroke. Your blood pressure is measured by placing a cuff on your arm to register.
  • Pulse Oximetry Testing (especially important during COVID pandemic) - Blood oxygen saturation readings with a pulse oximeter with values below 90% or low oxygenation can be correlated with mild effects such as headaches and shortness of breath or more severe effects which may interfere with heart and brain functions. This is measured with a simple pulse oximeter device placed on the tip of your finger.
  • Cardiac Rhythm Testing - This is used to identify normal or possible abnormal cardiac conditions. The test provides an immediate cardiac rhythm reading. Abnormal readings may be an indicator of heart arrhythmia and it's recommended this is thoroughly evaluated by a physician. The recording is made by gently placing your fingers on a recording pad for 30 seconds.
  • Oral Cancer Screening - Oral cancer is an abnormal finding that a dentist is well equipped to diagnose. We perform a comprehensive oral cancer examination. We use enhanced light transmission assisted visual inspection with Identafi, and bi-digital palpation to assist in revealing potential cancerous oral lesions. Our dentists also conduct a thorough head and neck examination.
  • Sleep Disorder Screening - If left untreated sleep apnea has been directly linked to hypertension, strokes, heart attacks, type 2 diabetes, cancer, dementia, industrial and automobile accidents, and even sexual dysfunction. A questionnaire, developed in conjunction with our clinical affiliates, screens patients for sleep-related breathing disorders.
