Orthodontic Hygiene 101

Braces offer a number of benefits to improve your teeth' functionality and appearance. When cared for properly, braces should not cause tooth decay or other oral issues. However, those with this orthodontic treatment need to put a little more effort into making sure they stay free of food particles and another buildup.

Here’s what you need to know when it comes to keeping your braces clean.

Why Do Braces Require More Care?

While braces work to correct alignment, they also temporarily allow more surface area for bacteria and plaque to live. Additionally, small food particles can sometimes get stuck in your hardware, even if you don’t realize it. If those particles are not removed through proper dental hygiene, they can allow for decay, cavities, and sensitivity.

How Do I Care for my Braces?

Understand the Hygiene Requirements

In order to keep your braces clean, you’ll need to brush your teeth and floss more often. It’s also a good idea to rinse with mouthwash after you eat to get rid of any leftover foods that could be stuck in your hardware.

Use the Right Tools

While a normal toothbrush will do a good job of keeping braces and mouth clean, there are several additional tools that make cleaning even easier, such as:

  • Floss threaders
  • Dental picks
  • Proxabrushes

Avoid Certain Foods

Sticky foods, such as gummies and caramel, can get stuck in your braces and create a mess of problems. As long as you or your child have braces, try to avoid these and other problematic foods.
