Scheduling Your Child’s First Dentist Appointment

As a parent, we know that the birth of your child is an emotional and exciting time — but also one filled with responsibility. One of those responsibilities is ensuring that your child is seen by their doctors and dentist routinely for exams to ensure that they are healthy and developing properly.

If you’re wondering when to schedule your baby’s first dental appointment, our team at ProHEALTH Dental is here to offer guidance and make your first visit easy and informative.

How Old Should My Child Be for Their First Checkup?

Any ‘first’ your little one has is exciting — but their first dental appointment will also start their path towards optimal oral health. So it’s important to know when you should schedule their first visit.

According to the American Association of Pediatric Dentists, it’s recommended that children go for their first oral health checkup after their first tooth emerges or by the time their first birthday comes around. This means as early as four to seven months for most children.

What Happens During the Visit?

Though you may think this seems early to bring your little one to the dentist, bringing them in as an infant helps to spot any early signs of tooth decay, gum decay, or delays in the development of their teeth. Introducing your child to a pediatric dentist early in life also provides you with resources in the event of a dental emergency such as from a fall.

At their first visit, our pediatric dentists will typically perform the following:

  • Examine and clean your baby’s teeth and gums.
  • Show you how to properly clean your baby’s teeth.
  • Recommend diet and fluoride needs as well as oral care products.
  • Answer all of your questions concerning their teeth and oral development.
